The story and illustrations are based off of the lives and events of the Herold family, Stephanie Krubsack’s ancestors from Bohemia, present day Czech Republic. In an effort to preserve the rich Czech-Slovak culture and educate others, she was inspired to create this piece upon traveling to her ancestral home back in 2009 and reuniting with family after being separated for five generations. As the 2009-2010 Miss Wisconsin Czech-Slovak Queen, Stephanie was able to travel to the Czech Republic as a cultural ambassador.
